Improve Your Internet Speed by Using DNS

DNS stands for Domain Name System/Service/Server. DNS helps lookup the address of the server. For example, the address of Google is 216.58.209. The server address can be found by pinging.

For example, if you want the machine address of yahoo,

Open command prompt (by opening run by pressing windows+r keys and enter cmd and press enter)

Type ping www.yahoo.com and hit enter

In the above image, the marked address is the server address. This address is what DNS looks up when user enters the human readable address(www.yahoo.com) of yahoo in the browser address and hits enter.

The Internet Service Providers already assigns DNS. But the DNS like Google DNS, Open DNS and many other DNS Services can be used that looks up for the address of servers a bit faster.

To assign a DNS for your internet connection,
Find the network icon in the tray, click it and Open Network and Sharing Center
Click on Local Area Connection
Local Area Connection Status Window appears
Click on Properties

Click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
Click on properties
Choose - Use the following DNS server address
Enter the DNS as shown below(for Gogle DNS is 8.8.8.8. and 8.8.4.4) in the Preferred DNS server and Alternate DNS server fileds

There are many DNS services like OpenDNS and Norton DNS.

Few Recommended Settings After Installing Windows OS

If you have installed windows on your PC/Laptop few settings are recommended.

Change the download path in the browser to any other drive other than the drive in which the OS is installed

If the Windows OS fails in the future the data downloaded from browsers which is always stored in the Downloads folder will be lost after reinstalling windows. So it is recommended to change the download path to another drive. For example, if windows is installed in C: drive, the downloads are set to download to C:\Users\Username\Downloads in the browser by default. Change it to D:\ or creating a folder in the required drive.
Enable Automatic Updates

Enable automatic updates that fixes security fixes in the OS and keeps windows up to date.

Note: Disable automatic updates if you have installed a pirated version of windows because you will receive "windows not genuine" error and also original windows is recommended installing in your desktop/laptop.

Create a restore point

Create a restore point after installing windows so that you can roll back the system to the date when the windows is installed if any problems arise in OS in the future

Install an Antivirus software

Install Antivirus software which starts guarding your PC/Laptop right after installing OS.

Use a cloud storage service

Use cloud storage like google drive or dropbox which stores your data in the servers. Upload files immediately to the cloud storage so that you can avoid data loss since the windows is installed.

Be cautious regarding installing toolbars and unfamiliar software

It is recommended not to install the software that comes like an add-on to the software that you are currently installing. Such add-on software and toolbars creep into your computer when you are installing particular software by keeping the "Install the software/toolbar XYZ" option checked in the install wizard of the software you are currently installing. Such un-noticeable toolbars or software brings adware/malware to your computer.

and press enter
here D is the drive letter. replace that with whatever drive you want to remove the virus from.
